In 2010 Joel received a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts to develop a new media work in collaboration with University of California San Diego (UCSD) research scientist Dr. Tamara Smyth at Simon Fraser University and CIRMMT in Montreal. The project included physical modelling and developing a MIDI instrument with programmers Jenifer Hsu at UCSD and Nicholas Esterer at McGill University. Some of this work is featured on Joel’s piece Ta da! from Dream Cassette (Origin Records 2016).
